The Practical Magic House -- San Juan Island

When you watch Practical Magic and have plans to visit THE island where it was filmed, you make the dang cookie.

The picturesque San Juan Island served as the mystical backdrop for this captivating tale of love, sisterhood, and the extraordinary powers of two extraordinary women. The charming island, with its idyllic landscapes and mesmerizing coastal views, provided the perfect setting to bring the enchanting story to life. Nestled in the tranquil embrace of the Salish Sea, San Juan Island lent an air of enchantment and tranquility to every scene, transporting both cast and audience into a realm where magic and reality intertwine. There was a touch of magic in the air when we visited as well.

When filming began in the late 90s, The Owens House was constructed in San Juan County Park on San Juan Island and then dismantled as filming ended. Barbra Streisand even fell under the spell of the Owens House and reportedly inquired about purchasing the home back then! They had to inform her it was actually just a facade and not a real home. But even though the magical house is no longer there, I brought the house back in cookie form. This experience was indeed magical, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my dad, who found the exact location and reserved our ferry to get there.

This cookie house is easily one of my most detailed and favorite cookies to date, I’m still so proud of it. I coated it in resin after our trip so I could keep it forever and always remember this magical day running around the island.
